I graduated from Case Western Reserve University in the spring of 2010 with a B.A. in Biochemistry. During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to participate with the Sports Medicine program. This experience allowed me to observe physicians performing surgeries on injured CWRU athletes. I loved being in the operating room, and it soon became my goal to go to medical school after graduation. Looking to build my medical school resume after college, I worked in the radiation oncology department at University Hospitals, completing cancer research as a research assistant in Dr. Scott Welford's lab. During this time, I saw a flyer on campus advertising an information session for the Masters of Anesthesia Program. The session piqued my interest and I started to believe that this career was a better fit for me. After shadowing an MSA student and an AA in the fall of 2011, I was convinced that I wanted to become an anesthetist. I am truly honored to be accepted into this prestigious program, and I am very excited to continue my education in Cleveland.
While most applications for medical school will not make volunteer work a requirement, I doubt there have been many medical students in the last 10 years who did not have a single volunteer hour on their medical school resume.

Supplementing his medical school resume is McLoughlin's research background. After his sophomore year of high school, he began studying, at The Ohio State University, the relationship between obesity and colon cancer while utilizing mice as test subjects. For the last two years at CWRU, he has worked in a biology lab using high-speed video cameras to observe the movement of special sensory organs on flies during their flight.
